The research points to a number most people undershoot — and a point of diminishing returns most people never reach.

The short answer: for most people, aim for roughly 10 or more hard sets per muscle group per week to get close to maximal growth. You can grow on less, especially as a beginner, and you can keep adding sets for small extra gains — but there's a point where more volume just costs you recovery, not muscle.
The clearest picture comes from a 2017 meta-analysis by Schoenfeld and colleagues, which pooled studies on weekly set volume and muscle growth. It found a dose-response relationship: across the studied range, more weekly sets meant more hypertrophy, and groups doing higher volumes grew more than groups doing less. (Schoenfeld et al., 2017) Later work broadly agrees that somewhere around 10 sets per muscle per week is where most of the benefit is captured, with extra sets adding progressively less.

"Sets" here means genuinely hard working sets taken close to failure — not warm-ups, and not half-hearted sets left five reps short.
One important split: weekly volume is the main lever for muscle size, but strength depends more on lifting heavy and practising the movement. If your goal is a bigger bench number rather than bigger pecs, adding endless sets matters less than progressively adding weight.
More is not infinitely better. Past your personal ceiling, extra sets stop adding muscle and start eating into recovery — worse sleep, nagging joints, sessions you dread. "Junk volume" is real: sets you do because a program says 20, not because they're driving growth. If your numbers stall and you feel beaten up, the fix is often fewer, harder sets, not more.
The number is meaningless without a definition, and this is where most people accidentally miscount by half.
A set counts if it is a hard working set for the muscle in question — taken to within a few reps of failure. Warm-ups do not count. Neither do the sets you drift through while looking at your phone.
Partial credit is the other trap. A bench press trains chest directly and triceps indirectly; a row trains back directly and biceps indirectly. Count direct work in full and indirect work at roughly half, or you will convince yourself your arms get twelve sets a week when they get four.
Total weekly volume is what the research tracks, but you cannot pile it all into one session and expect it to count. Quality falls off sharply after the first several hard sets for a muscle — the last sets of a twenty-set marathon are not doing what the first ones did.
The practical answer: train each muscle twice a week and split the volume between those sessions. Ten weekly sets becomes two sessions of five. Twenty becomes two of ten, or three of seven.
This is also why the classic one-body-part-a-day split struggles — it concentrates everything into a single session where the later sets are the least productive ones you will do.
Start at the bottom of your band and add sets over weeks, not all at once. Volume you add gradually is volume you can recover from.
More is better until it isn't, and the failure mode is not dramatic. It looks like this:
If two or more of those show up, cut volume by roughly a third for a week rather than pushing through. Recovery is where the growth actually happens; unrecovered volume is just fatigue you paid for.
The ceiling is unknown. Schoenfeld's analysis found more volume produced more growth across the range studied, and did not identify the point where it reverses. Absence of a measured ceiling is not proof there isn't one.
Study populations skew young and male. Most of this work is in young men, often untrained. How cleanly it transfers to older lifters, to women, and to people juggling heavy jobs is less established.
Recovery capacity is individual and it is not fixed. Sleep, stress, food and training age all move it. The same twenty sets can be productive in one month of your life and too much in the next.
No, and going to failure on every set makes the volume harder to recover from without adding much. Leaving one to three reps in reserve on most sets is the usual recommendation, with failure saved for the last set of an exercise.
Less than the volume does. Pick movements you can load progressively and perform consistently. Variety helps hit a muscle across its range, but swapping exercises constantly makes progress impossible to track.
Only marginally. Creatine lets you squeeze out an extra rep or two, and hitting your protein target gives your body the material to rebuild. Nothing on the shelf meaningfully raises how much hard training you can recover from — sleep does that, and it's free.
